Basic Blacksmithing: Core Skills
Prerequisite: Basic Blacksmithing: Intro or previous blacksmithing experience.
This course focuses on the core skills of hammer control, fire management, drawing out, cutting, bending, and twisting. Two versions of this course are offered:
3 Hooks: The student will forge a spike hook, J-Hook, and S-Hook while focusing on drawing out, hammer control, isolating material, points, square, octagon, round tapers and scrolling.
Leaves: The student will create several projects with different leaf styles while focusing on drawing out, hammer control, isolating material, hand held top tools, points and how to reduce cracking.
Classes are taught in our VIllage Smith from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (Five hours). Materials provided.
Once students have completed Basic Blacksmithing: Core Skills they are eligible to take any of the Blacksmithing Projects classes, Basic Forge Welding, or Basic Joinery.
Students should wear a cotton or other natural-fiber shirt (long sleeves optional), long pants or jeans, and work boots or close-toed shoes. Students should bring safety glasses and optionally hearing protection.
Bring a bottle of water and a sack lunch. All classes include a 30-minute break for lunch. Gourmet sandwiches, chips and drinks are available for purchase in the General Store.
Class is designed for students ages 18 and older. Students aged 15-17 years old may enroll so long as a parent or legal guardian signs the attendance release form at the beginning of the class. Youths ages 12-14 may enroll if a parent or legal guardian enrolls in and takes the class with the younger student. No exceptions.
Enrollment is required no less than a week before the class date. All enrollments are subject to availability.
Important notice: No refunds are allowed once the enrollment fee is received. Students who cannot attend a class for whatever reason may reschedule once, on a space-available basis.
