Blacksmithing Intro For Women

In honor of Mother’s Day, this introductory, skills-focused class will teach the fundamentals of blacksmithing in a supportive, female-focused environment where students can learn this traditional craft. While forging a plant hanger, throughout the day we will explore the long and often overlooked history of women blacksmiths and the future of women in the craft. Students will develop practical skills and a deeper understanding of blacksmithing. This class aims to create a welcoming entry point to blacksmithing for women. Everyone welcome. Taught by noted artisn smith Jennifer Cochran Anderson.

Taught at the Village Smithy from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. (5 hours). Materials provided.

The class project will be a plant hanger. Skills covered will include history, terminology, safety, starting, maintaining and extinguishing a coal fire, hammer and tong techniques, identifying steel temperatures by sight, tapering, curtbving, bending, twisting and brishing and finishing projects.

No refunds once enrollment fee has been received. Enrollment is required no less than a week before the class date. All enrollments are subject to availability.

This course substitutes for Basic Blacksmithing: Intro, after completion students will be eligible to take Basic Blacksmithing: Core Skills

Students should wear a cotton or other natural-fiber shirt (long sleeves optional), long pants or jeans, and work boots or close-toed shoes. Students should bring safety glasses and optionally hearing protection.

Bring a bottle of water and a sack lunch. All classes include a 30-minute break for lunch. Gourmet sandwiches, chips and drinks are available for purchase in the General Store.

Class is designed for students ages 18 and older. Students aged 15-17 years old may enroll so long as a parent or legal guardian signs the attendance release form at the beginning of the class. Youths ages 12-14 may enroll if a parent or legal guardian enrolls in and takes the class with the younger student. No exceptions.

No refunds are allowed once the enrollment fee is received. Students who cannot attend a class for whatever reason may reschedule once, on a space-available basis, but must notify us in writing before the class begins at info@pioneerfarms.org. No exceptions.
