Metalwork Merit Badge
This fast-paced introductory class qualifies students to complete the Boy Scout Metalwork merit badge. Teaches basic hammer skills, basic ways to work metal with forging, bending and decorative twists, with a small project. Safety training included.
Minimum class size 3 students, Class sizes are limited to 12 students total
For safety this class may require adult volunteers depending on the class size. The adult volunteers do not need to have any blacksmithing experience. They will be responsible for helping to ensure the students are being safe, staying on track, and helping reinforce the instructors lessons.
1-4 students: no additional adult volunteers required at class
5-8 students: 1 additional adult volunteer must be present at class
9-12 students: 2 additional adult volunteers must be present at class
Taught 3:30-6:30 p.m. on listed Saturdays in January to April and October to December. $100 per student. Materials are included.
Students are required to wear a long-sleeved natural fiber shirt, long pants and close-toed shoes, and bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated while working at the hot forge. An adult responsible for the scouts must remain on the property during the class. No exceptions. All enrollments are subject to availability.
ENROLLMENT OF ALL STUDENTS MUST BE COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE CLASS DATE. All enrollments are subject to availability. Class is designed for students ages 16 and older. Students age 12-15 years old may enroll so long as a parent or legal guardian, or a Scout leader, signs the attendance release form in person at the beginning of the class.
Important notice: No refunds are allowed once the enrollment fee is received. Students who cannot attend a class for whatever reason may reschedule once, on a space-available basis. Classes are not taught during summer months due to heat limitations on youth programs.
