Austin, the founder of Texas and namesake for its capital city: “I hope that a dead calm will reign over Texas for many years to come – and that there will be no more excitements of any kind whatever.” That was about a year before the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto where Texas cinched its independence from Mexico.
